Cheese, Bread & “Giant” Victories

Do you know that the road that led to one of the most world renown Bible passages and stories of all time began with David being directed by his father to essentially be an Uber Eats / Waitr for his brothers and their commander? It’s true. One of the grandest miracles was birthed in a mundane task of a simple blessing by a shepherd boy who took a break from tending the sheep.… “Bring lunch to your brothers!”

“And Jesse said to David his son, ‘Take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers. Also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand.’” 1 Samuel 17

David didn’t wake up that morning with the intent to kill a giant. He didn’t wake up with the intent to take on the opposition of a nation. He didn’t spring out of bed and charge towards the enemy’s lines. He woke up….available! He woke up….willing!

Can you imagine how the story may have unfolded differently if he would have combatted his father’s request with:

“Pffft. Have someone else serve my brothers! I’m not their keeper.”

OR

“That’s silly and simple. What value is there in me delivering a little bread and cheese?”

OR

“Sorry dad, I’m busy having a pity party because I’m over here feeding sheep while my brothers do the strong and important jobs.”

No – rather he said YES! He said yes to the mundane. The starting point of Goliath’s death began when David said “yes” to his dad’s simple request. We so often overlook simple obedience to the Lord. We so often overlook the power laced in the simplicities of the promptings of the Holy Spirit…we want some grand and lofty command! But what if the Holy Spirit whispers something basic, “Send so and so a text / give Sue a call / buy Joe some lunch today / hold the door open for that stranger /  go the extra mile at work / go hug your friend / go bring Karen a coffee / ETC!”

What if your obedience in the simple is the stepping stone to crushing the enemy and slaying the giant? What if your “little” obedience enables “giant” victories? What if being a cheese deliverer for a moment means crushing the enemy of a nation for a lifetime?

The best part? They aren’t what ifs!!! Every leading of the Holy Spirit is purposeful and life giving and enemy defeating. Why would we say no? Why would I say no?

Y’all! We get to help each other walk in victory over the giants that stare us in the face every day! I need someone in my life that’s like David and sees the enemy screaming at me and says, “Who is the uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God? Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine…Then David said to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head…” (1 Samuel 17)

The people needed a David. The Church needs the Jesus in YOU. The church needs the Jesus in ME. The world needs the Jesus in YOU. The world needs the Jesus in ME.

Are we too big for cheese deliveries if that’s what the Holy Spirit is telling us? Are we too prideful to believe that bread drop offs can be a birthing place for miracles and defeating the enemy? My encouragement is let’s believe! Let’s be obedient! Let’s wake up and tell our Father, “yes,” to whatever He asks! This makes the mundane exhilarating. This makes cleaning dishes purposeful. This makes the kindness you show to the man who cut you off on the way to work powerful. It makes everything useful for Jesus’ sake!!!

So, let’s stay “cheesy” fam! You never know what “giant” victories will come from simple obedience to the FATHER
