I was arrested by this picture in my Instagram feed. This is the largest Buddha statue in Thailand, and it was just recently reopened to the public. Other photos showed people standing back with hands together in reverence. However, this woman is leaning as far as she can over the railing so that she can grasp the statue with both hands and lay her head on it. This action emotes such longing, devotion and maybe even desperation.

My heart instantly gripped in my chest and my eyes filled with tears as I thought,“it can’t hear you.”

I was reminded of Psalm 115:4-8,

“4 Their idols are silver and gold,

    the work of human hands.

5 They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see.

6 They have ears, but do not hear;

    noses, but do not smell.

7 They have hands, but do not feel;

    feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat.

8 Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.

BUT there is a God Who hears the cry of that precious woman’s heart. He’s known her all her life, even before she was born. He loves her, and He died so that she could know Him.  Psalm 94:9, 19, “ He who planted the ear, does He not hear? He who formed the eye, does He not see? When the cares of my heart are many your consolations cheer my soul.”

Psalm 40:18, “ To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with Him?”

Psalm 41:13, “ For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I Who say to you, fear not I am the One Who helps you.”

Praise God!! That’s our God. That’s Who we have the privilege of serving everyday but many are bound in idolatry and have no concept of this freedom we have in Christ. They’ll stay bound unless they are told. Oh Jesus, burn within us a fire for the lost: across the world, in our own city and in our own families.
